You made me run in Soquel. We went to the bathroom and told me that we should go to Hilltop for some reason. You convince me and we started to run at NIGHT up the hill, me in flip flops, but half way there we decided it wasn't a good idea and omg we were laughing really loud while running. People were already sleeping and you were telling me to stop laughing so loud. Ah yes good times...good times...There are too many memories with you...Especially in elementary school when you took that picture of me by the pole. *Don't you dare post it* I also remember the time when we wouldn't talk to each other, it was for a whole year, then one sabbath you come up to me and ask me if I like the backstreet boys and if I was going to their concert, that's when we became friends again, Ever since that day we became Besties! Remember the summer that we graduated High School '05 that was going to be our last summer together. We were going to work at Soquel and had to go buy things for the whole week since we were going to stay there. We went to Target and you bought the BEP album. Once we were in the car, you get the album out and start opening it when out of no-where, your nose bleeds and you were wearing a white shirt, haha thank God for napkins. So much memories with you and more to come...You are the best friend whom I trust and love and know I can count on. Thank you for being such a wonderful person Yvette you are great in what you do.
[Top Photo: This was actually taken at SOQUEL, the location of most of our crazy memories. Yes, this was taken with a iZone Polaroid Camera. We were so cool]

Yvette and I were never formally introduced...at least I don't think so. I don't even know how we met. We even took a cute, friendly picture together before we even knew each other in our Freshmen Welcome Back night (2005)[see photo below] or something like that at the statue in LSU, I remember Yvette sang a classic, with Russy, MJ's "I'll Be There" I was standing next to Darren watching her sing and we even recorded it! haha. soon after that we got real cool, started taking naps with each other, having crazy random things happen on our trips to Target, like major smoke coming out of the hood of the car, on the freeway. We went to Kenya and shared a bed and got assaulted by a Rhino! (true story) there's too many happy unforgettable memories with this woman! She gave me nicknames like Freddie and Babae Irene, which stuck...like I respond naturally to those names. hahahaha. ah I love her so much. She's gorgeous, funny, photogenic, talented, trendy, and has a kind spirit and a giving heart. God definitely placed certain people in my life that inspired me to become a better person. Yvette is one of those special people. Thank you Yvette for being you! Almost 23! whuuuuuttt! =)

It was dark when our orders came in. Suit up and head out, they said. We had no choice but to listen, stuck on a damn island in the middle of who-knows-where. We took the mission, no choice and all, hoping that it would get us closer to the day they let us go.
Don’t forget your masks, they said. We were suiting up, and it was chilly, like being outside in a bathing suit. We didn’t like that part-not one bit. Thank heavens when we were done; masks on and headed out into the dark, as if we knew where in the hell we were going. We didn’t of course, but we pretended we did just to get it over with. Our orders were simply to take a swim; luckily it wasn’t the kind of swim you take off a short pier with cement boots.
We could swim- years of annoying instructors and screaming kids afraid to put a toe in the water got us good and ready to tackle our assignment. I was all for adventure; no matter how dangerous it was, call me up and we could ride out into the thick of it. She was the more cautious one, a bit scared, but she had her brave face on. I could see through that brave face, but I let her pretend she had me fooled. I’m not one for all that mushy crap, but I told her we would be all right and that I would watch out for her and I knew she believed me. Then I pushed her into the freezing waters.
We swam out, eyes lighting on nothing other than the various shades of black. Our tools of the trade, you may ask? A flashlight that barely lit anything farther than a foot in front of us. Not what we had in mind when we got the order, not really what we had in mind when we got on this fish filled island. Speaking of fish…
I felt her tug on my arm, making a motion with her small hands about something up ahead. I couldn’t make anything out, the onyx of our surroundings became impossibly darker. I felt her thrashing around next to me, freaking out in a way that only she could. She was going to suck in more water than she weighed if she didn’t cut that crap out. I grabbed her arm and towed her along beside me, away from whatever had her spooked. And suddenly, I knew why she was doing an impersonation of a seizure victim. I felt the ghosting touch of something slimy on my ankle, like a creepy zombie hand grabbing and pulling. I couldn’t afford to get spooked, I still had her arm in my hands getting her away from whatever the hell it was that was touching me. We kicked hard, out of reach and quickly out of breath.
We headed back to shore, hoping that that would be the last of the heart-stopping shocks in the murky waters. Our hope was just wishful thinking of course, not a minute after we’d freed ourselves from those green, ghostly claws something shiny and silver began to whiz past us with incredible speed. I tried to dodge and from the corner of my eye, I saw her face marred with confusion and she was wiggling out of the way as best she could. We were both hit, several times. The shock of it had us reeling and kicking faster to get to shore before the silver bullets could bring us down-permanently.
We made it, finally able to tear our masks off and gulp in much needed air. The freezing air didn’t bother us much, we were just happy to be alive and kicking. Our boss was waiting on shore for a report which we couldn’t give. Finally after our compatriots found their voices and they relayed the danger of the silver bullets whizzing past us and colliding with our bodies our boss shut them up with a simple question.
“You mean the giggle fish?”
Comment by Yvette: In other words, (lol) we were attacked by a "sea-bush" of some sort. It was dark and scary. We were on a science field trip on Catalina Island and didn't expect to have been so traumatized lol. Michelle is an awesome writer and is obviously really good with narratives. Thanks for this michelle!!
